Bill: Greg, you keep saying that you don’t think I’m really a Christian just because I don’t read my Bible much, and don’t show up at church too often, and don’t really like to talk about spiritual things. But I went forward at an evangelistic meeting three years ago, and I asked Christ into my heart, and I know I felt sincere when I did.
Greg: The reason I doubt whether you are truly converted is because of the lack of evidence. I just don’t see the evidence that you are a child of God.
Bill: What do you mean by ‘evidence’?
Greg: If I had had a beard when you saw me last week, and then had told you over the phone last night that I had shaven it off, you would believe what I said because the clean-shaven face you can see right now would be evidence. It is something that shows that what I said is true.
Bill: Yeah, . . . ?
Greg: Well, when God saves someone, He always leaves evidence.
Bill: What kind of evidence is there that God has forgiven my sin and written my name in heaven?
Greg: If He really has done that, there will be a lot, Bill! Because if God has really saved you, He’s done much more than simply forgiven your sins and put your name in the Book of Life. The Bible says that when God saves us, He radically changes us. He makes us alive from the dead (Ephesians 2:5), gives us a new heart and puts His Spirit in us (Ezekiel 36:26-27), renews our mind (Ephesians 4:23), crucifies our old man (Romans 6:6; Galatians 5:24) and makes us new creatures (2 Corinthians 5:17). Now, if God has done all that to you, Bill, it should be evident to people who know you! Think about it: to imagine that God could do all that to you and leave no observable evidence would be like saying a tornado touched down on your block last week but left no sign that it had been there!
Bill: Hmmm. I guess I have a lot to think about.
