A true Christian is someone who has repented of his sins. If you have repented of your sin, that means that God has so worked in your life that your attitude toward sin has been radically changed. Do you hate sin? Do you grieve over your sin? Do you see sin as a very dangerous thing? If you are a Christian, you will grieve over the sin that yet remains in your heart and over the sins you daily commit. If you see sin in your heart, does it bother you? Do you confess it to God? Do you make conscious efforts to turn away from it and to overcome it? Or do you hide it, protect it, defend it, and pamper it?
When you sin against others, do you deal with your sin in a Biblical way? Do you confess your sins, not only to God, but also to those against whom you sinned? Does your sin grieve you enough that you confess it to your spouse, your children, your parents, your neighbor, your boss, your Christian brother against whom you have sinned? Is the weight of your sinfulness greater than the pain of having to humble yourself before others in this way? Do you hate sin because God hates it? Can you honestly say that sin causes you greater heartache than any earthly loss or disappointment?
Paul wrote, “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. For observe this very thing, that you sorrowed in a godly manner: What diligence it produced in you, what clearing of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what vehement desire, what zeal, what vindication! In all things you proved yourselves to be clear in this matter” (2 Corinthians 7:10-11). We live in a day in which sin is not taken seriously. Too many professing Christians are content to give little or no time or attention to fighting against the sin which Christ suffered and bled and died to conquer. Too many are happy to treat sin as a cordial companion rather than as the bitter enemy of our Lord and of our souls. Have you repented of sin? Do you live a life of repentance? Are you a Christian?
